Chapter Five

Blades

The mall was the one place I hated with a passion, but for my girls, I’d gladly endure it. Especially if it gave Meiling and China time together. I knew my woman wouldn’t feel safe venturing out without protection, and since she’d just met Dingo, that meant I had to tag along. Honestly, I didn’t mind. While this wasn’t on my top one hundred favorite places to be, I enjoyed watching the various expressions on China’s face.

So far, our daughter had talked her into three outfits and a new pair of shoes. Little she did realize, I was paying attention to every little thing she admired. I could tell which ones she really wanted, and those she only found mildly interesting. She hadn’t caught on to the fact I’d called a Prospect to follow along behind us. I gave him a subtle signal for each item I wanted to buy for her, then he’d get it as we were leaving the store. Of course, it meant he had to make multiple trips to the vehicle so China wouldn’t wonder why we had so many bags.

She lightly ran her fingers over a purple leather purse. It was on the small side, but since she didn’t really have much to put it in right now, it would be just about right for her. I noticed there was a matching wallet on the shelf above it. Meiling glanced from her mom to me, flashed me a smile, then hustled China to the next shop. I shook my head, knowing I’d been caught by at least one of my girls. I pointed to both items and the Prospect gave me a thumbs-up before snatching them and heading for the register.

Dingo leaned in and dropped his voice low enough no one else would hear. “She’s going to be pissed when she gets in the car and sees all the crap you’ve been buying.”

“That’s why I told Van to bring one of the club trucks instead of riding his bike. If China comments about it, I can tell her I thought we might need a backup vehicle in case Meiling wasn’t ready to leave at the same time as us.”

He shook his head. “All right. I still say this isn’t going to go over very well for you.”

“I’ll give her the things she needs now. Other stuff I’ll hide somewhere and give her as random gifts or set a few aside for her birthday or Christmas.”

“I didn’t think about it, but you said China wasn’t born in the US. Does she celebrate Christmas? Meiling doesn’t know much about her heritage,” Dingo said.

“Yes and no. For me, she put up a tree, hung stockings for us, and we celebrated like other families by opening presents and having a nice meal together. But in her home country, the Lunar New Year is a family celebration. China once told me they still enjoy shopping and looking at decorations during Christmas in her hometown, but it’s nothing like what we do here.
